This value is similar to that of FWHM but is considered to be more reliable especially in conditions of poor seeing. This number comprises of two measurements; Full Width simply means that the full diameter of the star is used and Half Maximum is a measure of the distance from the centre of the star at which the brightness level decreases to half the level value at the centre.
Tough one to describe.
This customizable design generates custom Bahtinov masks, which are used to aid focusing telescopes during astrophotography. Hi, I’ve had a go at making a Bahtinov Mask using this website: Example diffraction patterns produced by a Bahtinov mask middle: Bahtinov factor Bahtinov factor must be a positive bahtunov.
Some people believe that the center of the left-hand side should be a bar blockedand not a slot open. Focal length mm Focal length must be a positive number. Bzhtinov an image and then looking at it on the camera’s built in screen is a step in the right direction but you can still be easily fooled by the view. The mask works by replacing the aperture stop of the optical system normally the circular shape of generaator objective itself with a stop which is asymmetric and periodic. Hi David Here’s what it should look like: This is the count of the slots in the upper- and lower-right sections.
astrojargon – Bahtinov Focusing Mask Generator: Overview
Designing a mask using drawing, design, or CAD software can be challenging, as the specifics of the mask change for each telescope based on aperture, focal length, and how you plan to attach the mask to the scope. It consists of a disk made of opaque material fitted over the telescope objective with slots cut out in a specific pattern devised by amateur astrophotographer Pavel Bahtinov. Say thanks by giving brentb a tip and help them continue to share amazing Things with the Thingiverse community.
I’ve made the mask for my 8″ reflector using materials commonly avaliable in an office supply store.
Central horizontal bar Some people believe that the center of the left-hand side should be a bar blockedand not a slot open. This generator makes generating masks significantly easier – simply enter some parameter values specific to your telescope on the next page, press the Generate!

Focusing mask which was invented by Pavel Bahtinov is considered to be the easiest, the fastest and an accurate tool for manual focusing. I’ve seen masks designed with slots all the way to the edge, and some that only had 5 or 6 slots, so I wanted to be flexible.

Read the CN thread for an explanation. I used the templates here: As the instrument’s focus is changed, the central spike appears to move from one side of the star to the other. This pattern normally would be an Airy disk resulting from a circular aperture, but with the mask in place, the pattern exhibits asymmetric spikes representing the transform of the mask pattern’s spatial frequency and orientation. Aperture must be a postive number. The size of this default mask means that a large 3d printer must print this.
In my case I had to print the mask on two pages. Copyright astro jargon. Or sign in with one of these services Sign in with Facebook. A focussing tool for Astro-photography. One thing I noticed is that I need a fainter star on the 14″ otherwise the pattern is overexposed. If non-zero, this shadows the central of your scope. Sripe offset must be an integer. If no good i’ll grab an image. Already have an account? Basic parameters Enter these three values, press Generate!
The clear aperture of your scope, in millimeters. All credit for the mask goes to Pavel Bahtinov for creating the design, and to Dennis Sakva for championing it on Cloudy Nights.
A complete Bahtinov mask.
